Knowledge Series | Sidi AbuBilaal Yakub | -------------------------------------------- Literature and the Importance of Reading (Part II) A literary society is formed through deep engagement with language, reflection, and meaning, whereas a post-literate society consumes text superficially, prioritizing speed, visuals, and immediacy over depth. Modern literacy has shifted with digital media: reading is now fragmented, reactive, and screen-mediated, affecting attention span, memory, and comprehension. There is a crucial difference between reading for information (data acquisition, utility-based) and reading for knowledge (integration, understanding, wisdom). Despite historically high literacy rates, society faces a literary crisis due to shallow reading habits, overstimulation, and the illusion of understanding. The Dunning–Kruger effect amplifies this crisis: minimal exposure creates false confidence, replacing humility and sustained learning. Analog visual cognition (imagination formed through words) differs from digital projection, which supplies ready-made images and weakens interpretive depth. Modern consumption patterns damage the imaginative faculty, replacing inner imagery with external stimulation. There is a strong link between good reading and vivid dreams, as both rely on a fertile imagination and symbolic cognition.
