This time, we will explain the "domestication experiments" carried out in the former Soviet Union. It is widely known that dogs, mankind's best companions, evolved from wild wolves. But was this process of "domestication" really the product of chance? Dmitri Belyayev, a geneticist from the former Soviet Union, thought that "other animals could be domesticated in a short period of time if humans carried out planned breeding." And so the "domestication experiments" began. In 1958, Belyayev founded a research institute in Siberia and resumed his research in genetics in earnest. The subject chosen for the domestication experiments was the silver fox. Domestication is different from simple breeding; it refers to the selective breeding of individuals with specific characteristics over generations, making the entire species more compatible with humans. Of the 6,000 species of mammals, only a few have been successfully domesticated. To be domesticated, an animal must meet several conditions, such as having a calm temperament, not feeling excessive stress in the presence of humans, and being able to breed smoothly. For this experiment, silver foxes that are relatively calm and not overly wary of humans were selected, and 30 males and 100 females were mated. The offspring were then divided into three groups: a friendly group, an intermediate group, and a disinterested group, and the most docile individuals were then mated together. As a result of continuing this selection process, the foxes' behavior changed dramatically after a few generations. They began to be affectionate with humans and enjoy being petted, and after 10 generations, even their appearance had changed. Silver foxes are originally characterized by their black and white fur, but domesticated individuals developed reddish-brown fur, droopy ears, curled tails, and rounder faces, giving them a more youthful appearance. This is consistent with the differences between wild wolves and domesticated dogs, and is important evidence that domestication affects not only an organism's behavior, but also its appearance. It was also discovered that domesticated foxes had lower levels of the stress hormone (cortisol) and secreted more of the hormone serotonin, which relieves anxiety. They became more mentally stable and docile. Belyayev passed away in 1985, but his research was continued by his collaborator Lyudmila Trut, who published a paper on the subject in 1999. As a result, their research attracted a great deal of attention worldwide and became extremely important in elucidating the mechanism of domestication. In this way, the wild silver foxes were transformed into cute pets that could coexist with humans. This was a historic experiment that proved that "the characteristics of an entire species can be genetically changed by continuing to breed weak individuals with each other." ■Table of Contents 00:00 Opening 00:44 ①What happens if you select gentle individuals? 01:46 ②A life-threatening research challenge 03:20 ③A bold attempt using foxes 05:26 ④Changes in appearance, not just personality 07:39 [Summary] ■Other recommended videos ・[Green, blue, transparent] 3 real creatures with strangely "colored" blood [Slowly explained creatures] • 【閲覧注意】緑・青・透明!奇怪な色の血液を持つ実在生物 3選【ゆっくり解説】 ・[Slowly explained] 8 Japanese creatures that are actually feared overseas • 【ゆっくり解説】実は海外で恐れられている日本の生物 8選 ・[Absolutely forbidden] Lose your memory if you eat it?!
