Pelopi-Gelia At the foot of Lepetymnos mountain we find one of the most beautiful villages of our island, Pelopi. The village is crossed by a small river that descends from Lepetymnos and ends in the Tsiknias river. Entering the heart of winter, mountain tours are the primary choice for our excursions. An ideal mountain destination is the highest mountain of Lesvos, Lepetymnos, with peaks of Prophet Ilias at 939m. and Vigla at 969 m. Reaching the top, you feel like you are touching heaven. The breathtaking view, the richest flora of Greece, the wild horses and the paths that lead from Pelopi to the two peaks of the mountain will leave an unforgettable dreamlike memory for the walker. The original name of the village was Gelia. According to tradition, due to pirate raids the inhabitants moved to a higher point on the mountain. Out of their joy at being saved from the pirates, the inhabitants gave the village the name Gelia. The current name Pelopi is due to Pelops son of the King of Phrygia who passed through Lesbos before reaching the Peloponnese. There is however a theory that the name is due to a town called Pelopi in the region of Lydia, an ancient kingdom of Asia Minor. Before the road that crosses the village was built, access from one side of the village to the other was via stone bridges, some of which have survived to this day. The inhabitants, who lived from animal husbandry, as they do today, exploited the flow of the river by using water mills, the ruins of which still exist, with the most impressive one near the small artificial lake that looks like something out of a fairy tale. The picturesqueness of the village unfolds at every step, from the cobbled traditional streets, the stone-built houses to the stone fountains. The church of Taxiarchis is surrounded by an impressive stone-built wall like a castle. In Pelopi we find many chapels. Inside the village is the chapel of Agios Georgios, the facade of which was designed by Stratis Arvanitis. Just outside the village, in the chapel of Agia Sotiras, ancient tombs were found. In the chapel of Agios Dimitrios, it is said that there was a cemetery during the Turkish occupation that had given the area the name Mizar, which comes from the Turkish word meaning cemetery. The Muslim element was strong in the village from the time when Christians and Muslims co-existed, with the most characteristic being the mosque in the center-market of the village. Prophet Elias The peak of the prophet Elias (938 meters) is the westernmost of the four of Lepetymnos. Kolavtos rises in the center, while Vigla and Myrivili rise to the east. The creation of the peaks took place after the violent eruptions of the Lepetymnos stratovolcano 20 million years ago, which with the continuous activity created the large volcanic structures. The vegetation of the area consists of extensive forests, oaks and walnut trees, while ferns and chestnuts will be encountered by the hiker among ravines. On the solid rock of the peak of Prophet Ilias, this picturesque chapel has been built, which is commemorated on July 20. The view compensates the hiker who has started for some time from Pelopi. It sees as far as the land of Troas and Asia Minor such as Moschonisia and Aivali and of course has a panoramic view of all of Lesbos. To the south, of course, the view is stopped by Mount Olympus. Ypsilometopo Ypsilometopos is located in the northern part of Lesvos, at a distance of about 50 km from the city of Mytilini. It is a beautiful and picturesque village at an altitude of 400 meters. Walking through the paved alleys of the village, we cross a landscape full of plum trees, figs, pomegranates, walnuts and plane trees. At the entrance of the village we will find the temple of Taxiarchis , a three-aisled basilica, with a very nice wood-carved gilded iconostasis. Stypsi A mountain village at a distance of ten kilometers from Petra , built on the southwestern slope of Mount Lepetymnos , at a height of about 400 meters. Stypsi owes its name to "alum", i.e. the double sulfate of aluminum and potassium, which abounds in its subsoil, useful for leather processing and an excellent primer in dyeing. The inhabitants are mainly livestock breeders, olive growers and excellent stone masons. 0:00 Pelopi 1:18 Prophet Elias Pelopi 3:27 Ypsilometopo 5:10 Stypsi
