Into The Wilderness - Our Camping and Backpacking Story in Linville Gorge | Explore Travels

We persevered through windchill temperatures as low as 17°F with wind gusts up to 21 mph. All in all, we hiked 11.5 miles with 3,183 ft. of elevation gain. It was a true adventure and we loved it! “The Cherokee called this place, Eeseeoh, which means River of Cliffs.” Christopher Blake The Linville Gorge is a designated wilderness area in North Carolina. This means the hiking trails don't adhere to the same standards as trails in traditional national park areas. The terrain is rugged and rocky - a real challenge for someone who loves hiking. We actually postponed our trip by one day due to a tropical storm, Nicole. The NC mountains got a lot of heavy wind and rain. To put it into perspective, Linville Falls averages 150 - 300 cubic ft. of water per second. During tropical storms, Nicole, the water flow was up to 5,000 cubic ft. per second. Something I didn't mention in the video was that my water reservoir valve was accidentally opened when we were settling in for the night. When I looked up, there was water running out from my sleeping bag. I slept most of the night with half my upper back wet. The water also froze inside our water reservoir tubes.
