The 10 Digit Technology; Understanding Virtual & Material Realities Speaker Series was recorded March 7, 2020 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan as a part of our 14th National CCF/FCMA Conference. Our speakers and panelists explore new approaches, research and projects on the material and digital realities in craft. Raphael Van Leirop is the Founder, CEO, and Creative Director at Hinterland, www.hinterlandgames.com, and creator of THE LONG DARK, www.thelongdark.com. Over the past 18 years, Raphael has written, directed, produced, & designed for several award-winning titles including Company of Heroes, Dawn of War, Space Marine, and Far Cry 3. In 2012, he founded Vancouver-based Hinterland, an independent studio described by Wired Magazine as “absolutely riddled with triple-A veterans”. Its first title, THE LONG DARK, has become a worldwide phenomenon, selling over 3.5M copies in over 190 countries and earning 90%+ positive player reviews on all platforms. Raphael discusses building Hinterland and The Long Dark, and how that attracts some of the most thoughtful community of players from all over the world, united with their desire to... not freeze to death in Canada. Raphael explains designing for a sense of immersion in game environments, how the language of physical craft exists in the digital craft of making games, and how game development can feel like a discipline that borrows heavily from other crafts. Raphael goes on to discuss: • How the barrier to entry in making games has never been lower • Connecting with your consumer and community • How crafting is a powerful game (and irl) loop • Designing game engagement and motivation through skills mastery • Shared game experience becoming a physical reality through merchandise • How story connects the game experience and community --- Follow CCF/FCMA on Instagram: / ccffcma Like CCF/FCMA on Facebook: / craftsmetiersdart Subscribe to our channel: / ccffcma Find out more about the Canadian Crafts Federation/ Fédération canadienne des métiers d'art at http://www.canadiancraftsfederation.ca.
