CIUS's Annual Shevchenko Lecture was conceived as a forum for important intellectual discussions concerning Ukrainian history, nation-building, language, literature, culture and identity. It is the institute's most eminent and oldest invited lecture. This year, CIUS was honoured to host Dr. Yaroslav Hrytsak, a Ukrainian historian and a professor at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, as well as director of the Institute for Historical Studies at the Lviv Franko National University and of CIUS’s Petro Jacyk Program for the Study of Modern Ukrainian History and Society in Lviv. Dr. Hrytsak presented on "Putin's Attack on Ukraine: Why Timing Matters". Russia’s President Vladimir Putin is obsessed with Ukraine. His state of mind is usually explained by either the effects of pandemic isolation or his reaction to the first or second Maidan. A different interpretation is that Putin’s obsession grew gradually from the early 1990s and that the plan for a fullscale invasion of Ukraine was approved in 2008. The timing proves that his actions were premeditated long ago and were largely motivated by the Kremlin’s neoimperialist ideology. Therefore, is a sustainable peaceful solution to the Russo-Ukrainian war possible? Recording date: 13 March 2025 Location: University of Alberta - Edmonton, Canada The Shevchenko Lecture is presented by CIUS in partnership with the Ukrainian Canadian Professional and Business Federation Association of Edmonton (UCPBAE).
