Cognitive Inertia was written specifically for the Hard Rain SoloistEnsemble and explores how our thoughts and memories often resist change, even when we try to move on. The piece plays with that idea musically - gestures that seem to move forward keep circling back, caught in their own momentum. The music combines live performance with pre-recorded processed sounds. The electronics reshape recordings made during rehearsals, so what we hear live (unpredictable and new) constantly interacts with echoes of the past (fixed and unchangeable). This mix of real-time performance and transformed material creates a blurred interference between memory and the present moment. Because timing is crucial, each musician performs with earphones to follow a shared click track to synchronize with the pre-recorded material. That pulse adds a sense of tension, a sonic representation of inertia, reminding us how hard it can be to break free from established patterns.
