The original 1977 Star Wars Marvel Comics were the first monthly expansion of the galaxy — before The Empire Strikes Back reshaped the myth. After adapting the original 1977 film, Marvel had to continue the story — without knowing where George Lucas would ultimately take it. Before the trilogy plan. Before the mythology solidified. Before Star Wars had a defined tone. In this video, we explore the earliest Star Wars Marvel Comics from 1977 and 1978 — in publication order — to see how the galaxy was developing in real time. These aren’t the later Dark Horse runs. Not the 1990s EU. Not modern canon. This is Star Wars in its infancy — when the tone was still elastic, the Jedi were still loosely defined, and the future was uncertain. What did Star Wars feel like in the late 1970s? How did Marvel handle Luke, Leia, Han, Vader, and the Rebellion when the long-term future wasn’t mapped out? Why did the tone lean into serialized pulp adventure? And how did characters like Jaxxon, Don-Wan Kihotay, and Beilert Valance expand the sandbox? This series follows the Star Wars Expanded Universe in publication order — not chronological order — to watch the saga evolve the way audiences experienced it at the time. If you were reading these comics in 1977 or 1978, I’d love to hear what they felt like.
