The band was formed in Bydgoszcz in 1983 by Grzegorz Kaźmierczak (vocals, lyrics) and Wojciech Woźniak (saxophone). From the very beginning, they stood out among other new wave and punk bands — their music was cold, hypnotic, minimalistic yet deeply emotional. It was complemented by Kaźmierczak’s poetic, existential lyrics, which already hinted that Variété would become a unique and unrepeatable artistic project. The band made their debut at the Jarocin Festival in 1984, and a year later they won the festival’s main prize, becoming a sensation of Poland’s 1980s alternative scene. Variété’s performances at Jarocin became legendary — their sparse, minimalist sound and hypnotic vocals transported audiences into a different, introspective dimension, contrasting sharply with the noisy punk and rock that dominated the festival. ✅ Bydgoszcz 1986 (recorded in 1986, officially released in 2002) A document of a young band at the height of their Jarocin-era fame. Raw cold-wave sound and Kaźmierczak’s early mature lyrics. ✅ Variété (1993) The debut studio album, recorded after Poland’s political transformation, showcased the band’s evolution into a more polished yet still dark and minimalist sound. The band reached for more complex arrangements, while Kaźmierczak’s lyrics became even more literary and reflective. ✅ Nowy materiał (2005) After several years of silence, Variété returned with fresh, modern sound — more contemporary and slightly more electronic. ✅ Zapach wyjścia (2008) An album that complements their “second opening” in the 21st century — minimalist, atmospheric, and intimate, as always true to their unique language. ✅ Piosenki kolonistów (2013) Variété’s trademark melancholy and cold atmosphere reach a particularly intense expression here. ✅ PPA Wrocław 2015 (2015) A live album, recorded during their performance at the Wrocław Actor’s Song Review. ✅ Nie wiem (2017) A studio album where the band delved even deeper into electronics and ambient textures. Hypnotic rhythms, sparse arrangements, and dark poetic images make Nie wiem one of their boldest and most fascinating albums. ✅ Dziki książę (2021) Their most recent studio album, considered one of their crowning achievements. This is an incredibly mature, intimate, and multilayered record — a summation of decades of uncompromising artistic pursuit. Here the band combines their cold sound with modern electronics and Kaźmierczak’s subtle, poignant poetry. ✅ Sieć Indry (2025) A meditative and conceptually rich album, often seen as one of the band’s most philosophically profound statements. Inspired by the Buddhist metaphor of Indra’s Net, the record unfolds as a reflection on interconnectedness, memory, and identity. The result is an album that feels both intimate and expansive — suspended between existential tension and fragile beauty. Variété is now a legend of Polish alternative music — a band that never sought compromise but instead kept discovering new forms of expression.
