Police fired canisters of pepper spray and smoke at marchers protesting against the summit after anarchists responded to calls to disperse by rolling trash bins and throwing rocks. The clashes began after hundreds of protesters, many shouting anti-capitalist slogans, tried to march from the outlying Lawrenceville neighbourhood toward the convention centre where the summit is being held. The march turned chaotic at just about the same time that US President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama arrived for a meeting with leaders of the world's major economies. The protesters banged on drums and chanted as they marched through the streets. The marchers included small groups of self-described anarchists, some wearing dark clothes and bandanas and carrying black flags. The marchers did not have a permit and, after a few blocks, police declared it an unlawful assembly. They played announcements over a loudspeaker telling people to leave or face arrest and then police in riot gear moved in to break it up. Protesters split into smaller groups. Some rolled large metal trash bins towards police. The windows of some local businesses were damaged, including a car dealership and a restaurant. Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said swift decisions resulted in very minimal property damage. Property damage amounted to 10 broken windows. Officers were seen taking away a handful of protesters in handcuffs. About an hour after the clashes started, the police and protesters were at a standoff and officers had sealed off main thoroughfares to downtown Pittsburgh. Officials said there were no injuries related to the protests.
