Step into my studio for this 2.5-hour mixed media painting workshop. If you enjoy expressive acrylic painting, loose mixed media techniques, and learning how to paint colourful birds step-by-step, this workshop will give you plenty of ideas to explore. Perfect for artists who love intuitive painting, layered textures, and vibrant wildlife subjects. Originally filmed in 2014, we explore expressive techniques using inks, fluid paint, and layered textures to create vibrant Australian Rainbow Lorikeets surrounded by native foliage. This class is all about loosening up — one of the hardest things for many artists to do. Instead of trying to control every brushstroke, we experiment with letting paint flow, move, and tell the story itself. The magic often happens when we release a little control and allow the materials to collaborate with us. Although I no longer use inks in my current practice, the same fluid painting principles still underpin the way I work today. These days I often use a technique I call “gloshing” (that’s a cross between glaze and wash)— letting paint travel across the canvas in expressive, intuitive ways to create movement, atmosphere and unexpected beauty. Many of the texture-building methods shown in this workshop are still part of my process today. Over the years I’ve also added new approaches using the artist stencils I design, which help create rich layers and dynamic surfaces in contemporary mixed media painting.
