The city changes, acquires a joyful atmosphere and resounds with the sounds of the arena and music played by bands in the street. Large paintings are displayed along the boulevards. The first Féria was held in Nîmes from 30 May to 2 June 1952 and the event has developed ever since. But what is the Féria? It is six days of festivities at Whitsun and three days in September with bullfights in the arena and abrivados and bandidos with local bulls. You can walk around and listen to peñas (small brass bands), dance the 'Sévillane' in the bodegas until late at night, eat paella in a Camargue or Seville style village, go to concerts, watch water-jousting in the Canal de la Fontaine, enjoy the evening market, attend mass in Provencal in the cathedral and watch the Pégoulade, the opening procession at the Whitsun Féria. La Féria est le point d'orgue de la vie festive nîmoise. Pendant plusieurs jours, le taureau est roi. Mais on ne vient pas à Nîmes uniquement pour la tauromachie : on inaugure souvent la Feria par la Pégoulade, le défilé carnavalesque du premier soir. Puis, on assiste à un abrivado ou un encierro. On voit déambuler, sur les boulevards, ces troupes musicales appelées peñas, on danse la Sévillane la nuit dans les bodegas, ces fameuses caves ou garages dans lesquels le vin des Costières de Nîmes, la sangria et le champagne coulent à flot. On entre dans les villages camarguais ou sévillans installés dans la ville, on regarde les joutes sur le canal de la Fontaine, ou encore on vibre au gré des concerts et des bals. Enfin, on assiste dans la cathédrale à une messe en Provençal. On vient à la Feria avant tout pour la fête, les amis et la musique. C'est pour l'animation des rues, la folie ambiante et les bodegas que l’on y reste.
