Translating "Who is a Great Hero?" (谁是大英雄) from the film The Eagle Shooting Heroes 1993 (射鵰英雄傳之東成西就). Original Cantonese song by Jacky Cheung (張學友). "The Eagle Shooting Heroes" was an over the top comedy film released in 1993. It is a parody of the famous "Legend of the Condor Heroes" (射鵰英雄傳) novel written by wuxia writer Jin Yong. He is also known as Louis Cha (金庸). The film came about because "Ashes of Time" (東邪西毒), another film inspired by "The Legend of the Condor Heroes" ran way over production time and budget. So they used essentially the same cast, but in different roles, to shoot "The Eagle Shooting Heroes" to make money to boost the production of "Ashes of Time". It was described as a "quick and dirty shoot". Somehow this film ended in most people's classic comedy film list, LOL. Although Ashes of Time is a far superior film when it was released. As a Jin Yong fan, I could not stomach this film when I was younger as it's far too silly for my liking. I still cringe at it watching on as an adult. As a kid I also thought it was a waste of a fantastic cast and that they should have made a more serious adaptation. I didn't know the connection to Ashes of Time at that time. The one thing I do remember from that series though is the main theme song. It was memorable and catchy. That's why I decided to translate it. The song "Who is a Great Hero" was sang by Jacky Cheung and was modeled after the main theme song for the 1976 version of the Legend of the Condor Heroes series. I hope I did it justice as there's a lot of play on words and similar sounding words. In terms of the cast, it was an all star cast led by Leslie Cheung (張國榮), Tony Leung (梁家輝), Tony Leung (梁朝偉), Jacky Cheung (張學友), and Kenny Bee (鍾鎮濤). The female cast includes Brigitte Lin (林青霞), Joey Wong (王祖賢), Maggie Cheung (張曼玉), Carina Lau (劉嘉玲), and Veronica Yip (葉玉卿).
