Ahuriri Valley at the turn of 2023 (South Island, New Zealand)

At the turn of the 2022 and 2023 we ventured out into Ahuriri Valley - a dramatic landscape of rugged tall mountains, beautiful river Ahuriri ribboning its way throught the entire valley, lots of wetlands (with lots and lots of sandflies) & tussock lands and evergreen native beech forest. It is right on the boarder of Otago and Canterbury and for us it was only a couple of hours drive to the starting point - Ahiriri Valley track. From here we made our way to Hagens Hut and beyond (cc 16km) where we camped by the river (which was a mistake because of the number of sandflies), here we celebrated arrival of 2023. Next morning, we returned back to the start of the track, drove a short distance to the start of the Dingle Burn track, which can take you all the way to Lake Hawea. We climbed to the top with the views well worth the effort. Here we camped on top of the mountain and the next morning enjoyed the most spectacular views of the sunrise above the inversion layer below. Spend a few hours at the top just enjoying the peace, silence and the views, beofre we descended back into the valley, still under the blanket of the morning cloud.
