Philippe Callens's dance Gold for the Mahieus from his book Continental Capers was dedicated to Hilda and Omer Mahieu of Mortsel, Belgium, who at the time the dance was published in 1986 had been dancing together for 50 years. It is a favorite of mine not only for its easy flow and many moments for social contact but also for its bright and lively tune and the opportunities it gives for varying the texture of the dancing. The dancers in this clip from the 2015 Celebration of Spring Ball show the possibilities with great energy and finesse: skip changing in the morris hey and (mostly) skipping in the single-file dance around at the end. What fun! You'll notice also that the dancers insert a polite turn after the second pass of the rights-and-lefts and that they mostly touch hands in the hey when they can--all nice points of style. Problems at the end of the dance meant that I could capture only two rounds, but it does normally go for three. My thanks to the dancers for their high spirits and nice form, to the Flying Romanos for their upbeat music, and to Philippe for his deep well of creativity and love of the English country dance.
