Elateia's most famous moment in history came in 339 BC, when Philip II of Macedon seized the city, causing panic in Athens and leading to the Athenian-Theban alliance against him. This event directly led to the Battle of Chaeronea in 338 BC, where Philip secured Macedonian dominance over Greece. Elateia's capture showcased its immense strategic value in Greek warfare. The city remained significant during Hellenistic and Roman times, with its fortifications continuously reinforced. It was a focal point during various conflicts, including wars between Macedonian rulers and later Roman campaigns in Greece.
