While on a mission to study a black hole for S.T.A.R. Labs, Superman discovers a spaceship on a collision course with the cosmic abyss. After rescuing the ship and its crew, he follows them to their home planet, only to be met with fear and hostility. The planet is now ruled by Jax-Ur and Mala, Kryptonian criminals who escaped the Phantom Zone after a cosmic event tore open a rift. Using their newfound powers, the pair have seized control, imposing strict order and claiming to have created a paradise.
