Listed as a #Historic Monument in 1889, the castle is the property of the town of Murol. The #fortress is situated on top of a basalt promontory created by a lava flow from the Tartaret #volcano at more than 900 metres altitude. Although the #castle appeared in texts in the middle of the 13th century, it seems to be occupied since the 11th century. In 1254, the fief of #Murol was in the hands of the Chamba family, vassals of the bishop of Clermont. In 1284, it passed through marriage to Guillaume San, a minor noble from Limagne. Early on, the design of the castle would have been, without a doubt, made up of a central core formed by a polygonal enclosure. At the start of the 15th century, it was surrounded by a wall that enclosed a small village that had thirty or so houses, gardens, a square, a fountain, a well and stables. Outside the wall, there were a forge, an oven which was later transformed into a dovecote, and an immense barn called "the barn of the tree". Around 1380, Guillaume de Murol entrusted Pierre Celeyrole with the task of renovating the castle. The castle retained its military corset but also became a comfortable residence. The upper castle did not have many openings for shooting; defense was mainly based on the fortress's dominant position, on its compactness and its high glacis*. France Auvergne Tourism: The few cannon ports protected the entrances to the castle core by enfilading the access ramp and controlling the gate from the upper courtyard's southern staircase tower. Refortification of Murol was necessary due to The Wars of Religion. Francois I d'Estaing (1561-1585) ordered constructing the massive enclosure of walls with the bastioned towers to resist artillery fire.
