I've always known about it but practically never visited the place. While out on another venture I found myself right next to the iconic Ladds Addition in southeast Portland and couldn't help but take a little walk through it. But what makes this place so intriguing, besides its historical connotation, is the bizarre manner in which it was structured. While most streets in Portland go north to south or east to west, Lands Addition is lined with diagonal streets and endless alleyways that also go a mixture of different ways. It's enough to make you lose track of what direction you're walking in and, for that matter, enough to make you lose your mind. The land was obtained by famous early Portlander William S. Ladd (a banker who also was mayor of Portland among other high ranking positions) in the 1870s and by the 1890s the land was slated to go against the normal structure of other east side Portland neighborhoods. This was just one way in which Ladds Addition was developed and promoted as a high class, posh place to live on the east side from downtown. Most of the houses there were built between 1891 and 1939. Lots of beautiful history!
