DS is out to differentiate itself as a comfort-focused premium brand, and the new DS 4 hatchback lives up to that brief. This plug-in hybrid model pairs a 178hp 1.6-liter petrol engine with a 107hp electric motor for a total output of 224hp. It's quick, refined and returns over 70mpg in real-world use, but it doesn't come cheap. With its long bonnet, coupe-like roofline and 21-inch wheels, the DS 4 cuts a distinctive figure. The interior matches that flair with high-quality materials, 'guilloche' stitching and ambient lighting that creates a lounge-like ambience. Quirky touches like the diamond-patterned speaker grilles and tactile controls add character. It's impressively spacious up front, but tight legroom in the back seats it firmly in coupé-hatchback territory. The boot measures a useful 430 litres. Standard kit like matrix LED headlights, a 10-inch touchscreen and wireless phone charging tick most boxes. Ride comfort is exceptional thanks to the standard active suspension and adaptive dampers. Large wheels don't upset the serene composure. Relaxed steering matches the unhurried nature, but grip and body control could be better. Refinement is excellent, with minimal wind and road noise apparent. The plug-in hybrid drivetrain suits the relaxed vibe. In electric mode it's quiet and smooth, while the petrol engine kicks in imperceptibly when required. The automatic gearbox can be hesitant to respond to the paddles, however. Brake pedal feel is also inconsistent. With reasonable electric range and economy in petrol-hybrid mode, running costs look reasonable next to rivals. But high list prices and limited trim choice make the DS 4 expensive. Equivalent versions of the Mercedes A-Class and BMW 1 Series undercut it significantly. In a class dominated by sporty alternatives, the DS 4 brings comfort and refinement back to the premium hatchback market. But its price premium over more practical and engaging rivals is hard to justify.
