BEAUTIFUL TBILISI! A Cultural Travel Guide featuring Levan Giorgadze of Tbilisi Free Walking Tours

Tbilisi has always been at a crossroads. In the past as Tiflis, it has fallen between the Persian, Ottoman and Russian empires, and in the turbulent present it sits uneasily between the European Union and Russia. It has suffered from its location but also benefitted. In praise of its location on the old silk roads join Levan and I as we starter tour in the Old Town shopping for spices and other local delights. My hotel, TbiliSee, is a perfect example of the redevelopment taking place in the old town. A sympathetic 2021 renovation of a building that boasts ornate balconies, a great kitchen, and sweeping panoramic views. The staff are excellent too. Highly recommended. Filmed November 2024 ‪@TravelObscurer‬ jonathanwheelerfilms.co.uk Music licensed through Artlist Drone footage and additional footage licensed through Envato #tbilisi #tbilisitravel Tbilisi, home to one third of the population of Georgia. An immensely friendly and picturesque city and one that I have waited years to visit. Tbilisi has always been at a crossroads, in the past as Tiflis, it has fallen between the Persian, Ottoman and Russian empires, and in the turbulent present it sits uneasily between the European Union and Russia. It has suffered from this Game of Thrones but also benefitted. In praise of its location on the old silk roads. we start in the Old Town shopping for spices and other local delights. My hotel, TbiliSee, is a perfect example of the redevelopment taking place in the old town. A sympathetic 2021 renovation of a building that boasts ornate balconies, a great kitchen, and sweeping panoramic views. The staff are excellent too. Highly recommended. Adjacent to the clock tower is a cafe that comes with Levan’s prized recommendation. If you want to relax with a latte amongst Persian decorations then this is the place. As we stroll towards Freedom square here is a quick look at some of Tbilisi’s famous landmarks and attractions. Lenin may have gone but thankfully there are still Soviet remnants, such as the Brutalist Bank of Georgia building - and of course the Metro. Like all Soviet metros it was built much further underground than necessary in order to double up as a bunker. There aren’t many stations but given Tbilisi’s traffic it’s still the best way to get around - and it’s cheap. You have to head in entirely the opposite direction to find Tbilisi’s most obvious monument from the Soviet period - if that’s the right way to call it… You can’t fail to spot the cable car as it glides over the rooftops of the old town. It’s a very short journey but one that I didn’t want to miss. The higher station lies next to the 8th century walls of the Narikala Fortress. It’s currently closed for renovations but that didn’t matter because I had come to see Mother Georgia.. Erected in 1958, the sculptor, Amashukeli, actually called in capital, but it soon became known as Mother of the Georgians or Mother Georgia. In her left hand she holds a bowl of wine to greet those who come as friends, and in her right hand is a sword for those who come as enemies. The Georgian national character in a nutshell. I’m so glad that she wasn’t consigned to the dustbin of history. Back at street level, We decide to seek out some of the best street art, starting with a very eclectic Soviet mosaic.
