"the ocean of fish" (Extreme Demon) by shmigels | Geometry Dash 2.2

A bunch of people were telling me to check this out, and I can understand why after watching it. Too bad it's nearly 4 minutes long and also a solid Extreme Demon in difficulty, so it's way above my skill level. Special thanks to Hypno for reaching out to me about showcasing this on behalf of shmigels, meaning that I can review it here on the channel. The visuals will obviously be the main focus here, which is centered on an ocean theme, as you'd expect from the level name. However, it's put together unlike pretty much every art level you see nowadays and for many years back even, as everything is composed entirely of objects like basic blocks and spikes. This creates a really unique look compared to the much more custom (and object-heavy) art levels you see nowadays. It may not look as polished as these more modern levels, for example when you see the blending spikes in the turtles overlap repeatedly at around 1:40, but making these creatures work with basic objects like this is a big part of the charm here. And it's not only the art itself that fits the theme, but also the movements of everything. The part at 2:03 is easily my favorite for this reason. The colorful jellyfish, with portals used cleverly for their bells, move naturally back and forth while synchronizing to the music, making the part feel alive. With such art and movements found throughout the level, it really lives up to its name. Even if you're not a big fan of the style and resulting look, I think you can appreciate the unique approach shmigels went for, and it's kept consistent over such a long duration too. Personally, I'm a big fan.
