In this video, I visit American Fossil Quarry in Kemmerer, Wyoming, one of the only fossil sites in the world where you get to keep what you find! This site is part of the legendary Green River Formation, a 50-million-year-old fossil bed that preserves some of the best examples of Eocene-era life. At American Fossil, you can split limestone layers and uncover incredibly well-preserved fish fossils. Some of the most common species you can find include: 🐟 Knightia – the official state fossil of Wyoming 🐟 Diplomystus – a predator with a distinctive upturned jaw 🐟 Priscacara – a spiny fish related to modern sunfish 🐟 Mioplosus – a meat-eating fish with sharp teeth 🐟 Amphiplaga and more rare finds if you’re lucky! After collecting fossils, I take them home to clean, prep, and stabilize them using some DIY fossil preparation techniques.
