The Savannah Great Horned Owl cam offered millions of viewers the chance to see what it takes to raise a single young owlet from a helpless hatchling to one of the forest's most powerful predators. Join us down memory lane as we relive the most interesting, endearing, and remarkable moments from the 2022 breeding season. --- In Savannah, Georgia, a pair of Great Horned Owls made a vacant Osprey nest their home for the 2022 breeding season. The female unveiled her first and only egg on a morning in mid-January. About one month later, a star-shaped crack in the egg signaled that an owlet was about to hatch. A territorial Red-tailed Hawk knocked the female off her nest to reveal the first look at the fuzzy hatchling. While mom watched over the owlet, the male spent the night hunting for prey and delivering meals to his family. For the first few weeks of the nestling period, the female offered up bite-size bits of prey to her youngster. She kept a close watch on her surroundings and warned intruders with fierce displays if they came too close. Throughout the nestling period, viewers marveled at the incredible diversity of prey that was delivered to the owlet. When the owls weren't dining on small mammals, they would feast on an array of waterfowl, bullfrogs, and snakes. Even more remarkable were the large birds that were brought to the nest, like a Barred Owl and a Great Egret. This food fueled the owlet's growth for nearly 1.5 months, until it was ready to make the leap onto nearby branches. The adventurous owlet spent the next couple of weeks practicing its climbing skills around the nest site. By mid-April, the owlet finally garnered the confidence to leave its nest and begin exploring the surrounding forest! Great Horned Owls associate with their parents for several months after fledging while they hone their skills. This nest sat nearly 80′ above one of the six Audubon International Certified golf courses at The Landings, on Skidaway Island, near Savannah, Georgia. Over the course of 2015 and 2016, a pair of owls successfully fledged four owlets from the site, but they did not return to breed in 2017. Instead, a pair of Ospreys began renovating the nest and committed to breeding at the same site from 2017 to 2019, when the dead tree that held the nest was removed due to being designated as a falling hazard. A new nest site was erected in an adjacent tree in the fall of 2019, and the Ospreys were quick to take up residence in 2020 and 2021. In January 2022, a pair of Great Horned Owls returned to the cam site to nest for the first time since 2016. Great Horned Owls are fierce predators that hunt a diverse assortment of prey. They are generally nocturnal hunters, but will also hunt in broad daylight. Throughout the nesting period, the owls may arrive at the nest site with meals of small- to medium-sized mammals, reptiles, fish, and birds of all sizes. Female Great Horned Owls spend most of the time at the nest caring for eggs and owlets while males hunt for food. After fledging, young may remain with their parents for 3–4 months before dispersing from natal territories.
