This adventure went pretty good, considering the conditions. About 75% of the corn was knocked down in July, when we had 9" of rain in around 12 hours. It's November 6th when I took the video. The corn was also getting ravaged by the critters & a lot of that was flattened too. They seem to like the Glass Gem over the run-of-the-mill field corn. They didn't take it all & I was able to save some cobs for replanting. A lot of that corn seems to have an issue with the ears getting moldy. They seem to be wrapped to tight in the husk & can't dry out. On the other hand, smut isn't much of an issue with this variety. It will also put out a decent, mid sized cob if the plants are not crowded. One thing of note, it smells weird after it's been chopped. It smelled more like cucumber or pumpkin vines than corn. It doesn't smell right, fermenting on the compost pile either. Smells like rotting potatoes after they froze. The chopper did better than anticipated. The worst thing to happen, was the knife plugging. Even though we haven't had much rain this last month, it was still rather wet under the downed corn. The wet debris creates a shell over the front of the knife section & it stops cutting. Had one row where half of it didn't go through the chopper & was pushed down to the ground. Looks like the gathering chains just rip off the top half of the stalk & feed it through. Which was an amazing feat by itself, as that dry corn was slippery. It did manage to cleanly cut a lot of the downed corn, so I'm both pleased & surprised. The standing corn it handled like a champ & that chopper has a good appetite. I could see it handling greener corn in a more spread out stand, at speeds seen in my vintage Gehl company videos. Overall, I had a good time! Wish I had another 20 acres of corn & a couple extra wagons. A silo & cows wouldn't hurt either. But not at today's prices!! Enjoy!!
