Park Güell, Barcelona – amazing park designed by Antoni Gaudi

The beautifully landscaped Park Güell is one of Barcelona's most iconic attractions and has been described as Antoni Gaudi's tribute to nature. The winding bench decorated with broken ceramics above the columned hall is world-famous and offers a fantastic view over the city. The main entrance of Park Güell is on the south side. Also at Park Güell, as almost everywhere in Barcelona, it is advisable to book the tickets in advance. You save yourself long waiting times if you even get into the park. Upon entering the park, between two gingerbread-styled pavilions crowned by colored turrets, we see a grand staircase that leads up to a portico. In the middle of the stairs we encounter the symbol of the park: a dragon decorated with broken ceramics, the so-called trencadis in mosaic form. He is the guardian of the park, but with his colorful mosaics he doesn't appear martial, but rather very friendly. Whether it's the colorful pavilions, the colorful dragon (some say it's a salamander) or the ornate staircase, we can already see the typical style of Modernisme everywhere. The stairs then take us to a columned hall. It consists of 86 columns and was originally intended as a marketplace for a planned housing estate. When building this hall, Gaudi was inspired by ancient Greek architecture. His model here was above all the temple at Delphi. The hall supports the main focal point of the park: the large terrace, which rests on the pillars of the hall. According to the original plan, the square was intended to represent a Greek theater suitable for community gatherings and cultural and religious festivals. The terrace is lined with a balustrade covered with broken ceramics and surrounded by a bench. Salvador Dali once called the bench the forerunner of surrealism. Colorful like children's toys, it winds its way in wavy lines, creating cozy chatting niches and giving visitors a unique view of the city. The Portico of the Washerwoman branches off to the left of the Dragon Staircase. It got its name from one of the pillars in the shape of a washerwoman. Gaudi built a series of viaducts and porticoes to level the natural gradient in the park and harmoniously connect the levels. The undulating colonnade is characteristic of Gaudi's organic construction: the stone and brick building material integrates naturally into the structure of the escarpment. The fairytale green area of Park Güell is a tangle of paths, arcades, viaducts, walls and bridges that has been carefully and originally integrated into the landscape. Here Gaudi succeeded in completely adapting his architecture to the essence of nature. The result is a fairytale garden characterized by lovely details. The history of Park Güell began in 1899. In that year, the industrialist and patron Eusebi Güell acquired the site on a ridge with a beautiful view of Barcelona. In 1900, Güell commissioned the architect Antoni Gaudí to build a complex modeled on an English garden city - hence the English spelling of "park" (and not "parc" as in Catalan). Nature and living should form an equal symbiosis in Park Güell. Next to the Sagrada Familia, this was Gaudí's biggest project. 60 villas were planned, but no interested parties were found. Only three buildings, the pathways and the extensive gardens were completed. In 1922 Güell's heirs sold the site to the city and in 1926 the site became a public park.
