Ethics of Organ Trading

With long waiting lists to receive transplant organs via official channels, many people take matters into their own hands and organise private transplants, often involving donors overseas. This video, produced as an assessed activity by second year Medical Biochemistry students at the University of Leicester, UK tells the fictional account of one mother's decision to seek a private transplant for her daughter. The film was made by Kyle Headen, Alice Merrill, Jaspreet Seerha, Eleanor Star and Roisin Thomas. They received good marks for the concept and the acting within the story. Although the health risks of having (and not having) the transplant were discussed, the judges felt they could have made more of the underlying ethical issues, e.g. autonomy and justice.
