In this lecture, Dr. Emily S. Patterson discusses how work systems can be made more resilient by incorporation of AI Tools. She begins by explaining the elements of work-system resilience and describes potential impacts of AI implementation into work-systems, including the potential for AI to interfere with existing sources of system resilience. Dr. Patterson also discusses existing knowledge-gaps in AI safety from the Human Factors Perspective, and also how AI might be used to combat known healthcare safety issues, such as the need to improve provider and team situational awareness, improve care transitions for patients, reduce alarm fatigue and cognitive overload for health care workers, etc. She also discusses the challenges of aligning AI with context-based goal prioritization within the work system from the Human Factors perspective. Dr. Patterson discusses both how AI can be used to enhance work-system resilience s well as how AI tools themselves can be made more resilient and adaptive, in order to pro-actively defend against system "brittleness" and both anticipated and unanticipated failure modes.
