Vehicles washed away as heavy rain floods Greek island of Skiathos

Hundreds of tourists were stranded on the Greek holiday island of Skiathos after it was hit by torrential rain and flash floods. At least one person was killed after being carried away by flood waters and another was reported missing during the downpours. Officials said the amount of water that fell in 24 hours was the same amount of rainfall usually expected for the whole of autumn. British tourists were mostly said to be stranded at the island’s airport, with no way of immediately returning home, as flights were cancelled. Greek police banned travel to Skiathos, as well as the regional capital, Volos and nearby Pelion. Some tourists went on social media to claim that food was running low and power supplies had been cut. Images showed streets submerged under rainfall, flood waters raging through streets, and a car being washed out to sea.
