Date: January 27, 2026 (Tuesday) Nicholas Coppel is a former senior career diplomat and was Australia’s Ambassador to Myanmar (2015-2018). He is currently Honorary Fellow at the University of Melbourne and Vice President of the Australia Myanmar Institute. Previous postings include head of the peacekeeping and state-building Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI), Deputy High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, Deputy Ambassador to the Philippines and a posting to Washington DC. Since the February 2021 coup, Nicholas has written opinion editorials and been interviewed by numerous media outlets about developments in Myanmar. He has researched and authored two book chapters and co-authored several academic articles on Myanmar. His monograph, Myanmar’s Digital Coup – How the World Responded, co-authored with Associate Professor Lennon Chang, is published by Palgrave Macmillan (2024).
