Road 551 (Langjökulsvegur), Iceland | The road that goes straight into the glacier (11.08.2021)

I’d say road 551 (Langjökulsvegur) is a small little hidden gem in Western Highlands of Iceland. This road is going straight into the Langjökull glacier and it literally does just that. I was very excited to be able to drive so close to the glacier and set my foot on it! In this video we will cover this road in its entire length and also in both ways. 551 starts from road 550 and it’s pretty short, only 16 km (10 miles) long. From there it only ascends and the maximum elevation just before the glacier is 821 meters (2694 ft). Klaki base camp is also located on 551, this is the place where people are taken on tours to go onto the glacier. These tours are being done by some very cool trucks! 551 is not an F-road, so a big 4x4 vehicle is not mandatory, as I also saw some passenger cars there. However, it still has lots of rocks and can be a bit rough going. I’d highly recommend checking out this route, even if you are not planning on taking the tour going onto the glacier. You can still drive very close to Langjökull and experience the edge of the glacier, and as it’s not an official F-road, it isn’t that tough and doesn’t have any unbridged rivers.
