The BUDGET Liveaboard? Meet the Beneteau Swift Trawler 54 | Test, Tour & Review

In this full yacht tour and sea trial, Jack Haines steps aboard the Swift Trawler 54, the largest boat Beneteau has built in the Swift Trawler range. Designed by Bill Dixon with styling from Pierangelo Andreani, it’s been 20 years since the original ST42 launched and the ST54 now brings a more serious cruising focus to the range. Twin Cummins 550hp diesels, nearly 3,500 litres of fuel, and a semi-displacement hull set it up for longer passages, but it’s still intended as an owner-operated yacht, and that shows in how it’s laid out and equipped. Aft, the hydraulic bathing platform has built-in tender chocks and a proper boarding ladder, plus the option for a crane in the lazarette. There’s good access to the engine room without lifting heavy hatches, and the cockpit links neatly into wide side decks with tall bulwarks. The flybridge gets a central helm, dining space, wet bar, and sunbathing area, plus a few optional extras like an electric bimini or solar panels. The three-cabin, two-bathroom layout sleeps up to six guests, with a full-beam owner’s cabin, a VIP forward and a third cabin that can be configured with over-under bunks or a double. The galley sits midships with proper domestic appliances, and the saloon is split into a forward dinette and an aft lounging area. On the water, the ST54 cruises steadily between 14 and 16 knots, but it’s just as comfortable dropping back to 8-10 knots when needed. It’s quiet at those lower speeds, and if you spec the silent boat pack, you can even run the air con and stabilisers without a generator. Handling is straightforward, with bow and stern thrusters as standard and an optional joystick. The driving experience isn’t exciting, but it’s confidence-inspiring - especially for covering miles or handling the boat shorthanded. All in all, the ST54 feels like a boat you could live on board comfortably for a long period of time.
