Chelan County sheriff update on Travis Decker search as manhunt enters 2nd month

Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison sat down with KOMO News to provide an update on the ongoing manhunt for Travis Decker, one month after 9-year-old Paityn, 8-year-old Evelyn, and 5-year-old Olivia were found dead at a campground near Leavenworth. "It was a loss for the family, but it was also a loss for the community, (and) a loss for the agency. It motivates us. It pushes us," Morrison said about the loss of the three Decker sisters. "A lot of the kids we have in our community played sports with Paityn, Evelyn and Olivia, knew them personally, and I think it’s very devastating for parents to not only deal with this but also talk to their kids about it." Morrison said there was new DNA evidence that was recently disclosed to the public that links Decker to the crime scene where the girls were found. A bloody fingerprint on the tailgate of the truck found at the campground near Leavenworth, where the girls’ bodies were discovered, matches the DNA profile investigators believe is Travis Decker’s. "It was a fingerprint that, of course, had blood on it and we were able to grab samples of that thanks to Washington State Patrol’s crime lab and our detectives," Morrison said. Morrison said investigators have been following the Bryan Kohberger and the University of Idaho murders case, looking at the challenges prosecutors and investigators faced in the case. He said he wants a solid case to be built against Decker and doesn't want any defense counsel to find any weaknesses in the case. "Finding him alive and putting him in front of our judges. Our whole mission is to set up the meeting," Morrison said when asked what justice in the case would look like. "We’ve worked with our prosecutors to make sure we have a solid case moving forward. If we can’t find him alive, of course, we’d like to recover his remains just to make sure we bring closure to Whitney and her family." When asked if he believed Decker was still alive, Morrison said, "I still feel there’s a possibility, but certainly, we recognize there’s a possibility he could also be deceased. That’s a large area we could search if we get in there. We feel confident we have the right resources, individuals that are more experienced than him, that are out there. They’re searching and we’ll continue to put the pressure on him." Morrison said the next steps include the National Park Service deploying its swift water team to search the Icicle Creek.
