On this special episode of Art Loft, go in-depth with Peter London. Follow along as he takes his Peter London Global Dance Company dancers from rehearsal room to stage at the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. The show, entitled “Edge of Tomorrow” takes audiences on a journey from spiritual dance to secular, with influences of African, ballet, and modern dance movements. Standout choreographed works “Children of the Underground” and “Luner Landing” are explosions of contemporary Afro-Caribbean dance and music from Africa. The dancer, choreographer, teacher, and artistic director of the Peter London Global Dance Company has made a mark on Miami, but his journey with dance began in childhood. London reflects on his experiences as a child in Trinidad as he observed and participated in the traditional movements at Yoruba temples. The energy of the drumming and the impact of that meaningful movement stayed with him. As he continued to dance in local companies, he eventually professionally trained in ballet and learned the basics of Geoffrey Holder techniques. His first international tour was at age 17, and as London remembers, he soon decided to meld the professional training with the freedom of movement he witnessed at Orisha ceremonies. The next step in his modern dance career: Julliard. London vividly remembers his interactions with dance icon Alvin Aliey. London was personally invited by Ailey to join his company as a dancer – all while still a freshman at Julliard. By then, London had already danced with José Limón’s company. Instead of joining Ailey’s company, London continued his work at Julliard. He reflects on a whirlwind experience in New York where he juggled classes at Julliard and class with the Martha Graham company. After graduation, London decided to join the Graham company and would eventually become a principal dancer. Meet London in the studio, as he leads a class of advanced students at the New World School of the Arts in Miami, Florida. He explains his thoughtful approach to dance, which allows for each dancer to advance in their own spiritual journeys. He describes time in class as “spiritual work” that is equally demanding and rewarding. As part of “Edge of Tomorrow”, London has maintained his commitment to empowering the next generation of choreographers and dancers. Past students and company members – Jamar Roberts, Lloyd Knight, and Justin Rapaport – also presented choreographed works as part of the performance. Lloyd Knight and Justin Rapaport choreographed and performed mesmerizing solos. PLDGC members performed a group piece choreographed by Jamar Roberts with music by Etienne Charles. Experience Peter London, in his own words, reflect on his journey in contemporary dance and how he sees himself as a humble participant with the “divine beings” who are a part of the Peter London Global Dance Company.
