Auguste Rodin worked on The Gates of Hell for nearly forty years. Originally commissioned for the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris, the museum was never built due to lack of funds — and the monumental doorway was never installed. Instead, the project became Rodin’s lifelong laboratory. Figures were added, removed, reworked, and extracted. Some of his most famous sculptures were born inside these doors, including The Thinker, The Kiss, and The Three Shades.
