Irish music for classical guitar arranged and performed by Jerry Willard. (the table of contents is at the end of this article) Ireland has a rich and ancient history of music, poetry and dance and is one of the few cultures that have sustained itself and has not become overly influenced by pop culture and mass media. Many of the songs and dances in this book are ancient and yet can still be heard in the homes, pubs and gathering places of the people of Ireland today. Most of the tunes in this book are anonymous with one important exception Ireland's most well known composer Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738). O'Carolan was blinded by smallpox at the age eighteen after which he took up the harp. At the age of twenty-one he traveled Ireland composing songs for patrons and performing his melodies. I have included some of his compositions in this book that lend themselves to finger-style guitar. I recorded the music at what I considered to be performance tempos. The tempos might seem a bit fast for this kind of book but I feel it is important for this music so it has spirit and life, however, many of these tunes can be successfully played at a variety of tempos. I also used a capo on the 2nd fret of the guitar when recording many of these tunes. The lute like higher tessitura (range) helps to make the tunes sing, clarify the counterpoint and sound more authentic. Of course one could just as easily play them without a capo depending on the type of guitar you play and the musical aesthetic that you are after. I have cut some of the repeats of the music to keep the video from becoming too long. These compositions were recorded in Stowe Vermont in 2014. I am playing a Francisco Fernandez guitar made in Madrid in 1960.
