What is practice-led or practice-based research study in the arts and humanities? What is the particular vitality of that method? How does it differ for the students compared to the more traditional pure-thesis submission? We talk to selected supervisors and AHRC-funded PhD students who undertake research with a practice element – painting, drama, instrument making, design – about the richness of these methods and the challenges in undertaking research through practice. "My practice, theory and thesis are absolutely entangled, you can't separate them..." Sally Sutherland (University of Brighton) "practice reveals and communicates insights that can't be accessed by other means..." Dr Tom Ainsworth (University of Brighton) Watch this, the fourth of 15 AHRC films giving a sense of the emotional and intellectual investment in studying the arts and humanities at PhD level. Featuring in order of appearance . Students: Chloe Lee (Royal Holloway University of London), Sally Sutherland (University of Brighton), Daniel Wheeldon (University of Edinburgh), Dr Tom Ainsworth (University of Brighton). _______ These films were organised through the Techne Doctoral Training Partnership in 2020 on behalf of the AHRC and represent the opportunities available for any of the doctoral training partnerships and centres developed through AHRC funding.
