Rae’s Guitar Somewhere around 1997-98, I took up the hobby of guitar building, which was a bit of a bold move since after five years of shop classes I had produced a wobbly pedestal table. Anyway, over the course of about 12 years I produced seven instruments – 3 electric, 2 acoustic, 1 travel guitar and 1 bass. The last guitar I built is the one in this video. It is the only guitar I built where I had access to an amazing shop. Before that I did a lot of my building with hand tools, a friend’s shop, a rental place and what I could cobble together over time. All seven instruments play and sound fine, some better than others! All that to say, that the guitar in the video is the one that turned out with the fewest flaws. I normally wouldn’t post something that is just a demo, but the person whose shop I used asked years ago how it has aged. He had started building several OM style guitars, and wanted to know how this one turned out. So, Rae’s guitar is based on plans for a Martin OM. The guitar is all solid wood. Indian Rosewood back and sides. Sitka Spruce Top. Rosewood fingerboard, headstock plate and bridge. Mahogany neck. Figured maple binding. Bone Nut and Bridge. Gotoh tuners. And mother of peal inlays. People often ask if I make everything and the answer is yes. I purchase the wood and saw it, carve it bend it, sand it and sometimes accidently gouge and break it. One of the most important pieces of advice I ever got was that, “You will make mistakes, the key is knowing how to fix them!” I should note that my friend with the amazing shop did the spray finish. I tried finishing my previous acoustic in a toolshed with a hardware store spray gun and it didn’t go to well! My last two electrics have a hand rubbed finish. For the Techies: Everything was recorded in Fender Studio Pro 8. I used two microphones – a SE Electronics SE8 at the 12th Fret and an AKG C414B XLS at the lower bout. The microphones were plugged into SSL 500 Series 6Channel with no EQ and some light compression. The SSL Output went directly into an Allen & Heath ZEDi10 and into Fender Studio Pro 8. I set the two microphones to the same level and panned them extreme left and right. The AKG is set flat and the SE8 is rolled off at 80Hz. I mixed down the audio into both processed and unprocessed tracks and alternated between the two in the video (titled in upper left-hand corner). Processing was simple. I used a Waves L1 Limiter on the output to prevent clipping On the buss I used a Waves CLA 3a compressor set to the acoustic guitar present and a TC Electronics 8210 Reverb (Amsterdam Hall preset) and a TC Electronics 1210 Expander (Acoustic Guitar Widened preset). I didn’t Master the final mix, so no extra compression or EQ was added. Video shot on a Fujifilm X-T3 (Fujifilm 10-24mm lens) and an iPhone SE. The final video was edited in DaVinci Resolve. Recording and monitoring was through an Allen&Heath ZEDi10 with Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro. ©2026 kgbirmingham media
