(3 Apr 2020) Crematoriums in Belgium have seen an increase in demand as the number of deaths caused by the new coronavirus rises across the country. Since the start of the week, the Wilrijk Crematorium, near Antwerp, has performed 200 more cremations than normal and must abide by strict new safety measures designed to help prevent further contamination. Upon arrival, coffins are disinfected by employees wearing full personal protective equipment. "Our employees have to work with personal protection equipment and that is quite new for us," said Tom Wustenberghs, the crematorium's general manager. "Normally we don't do that, but now because of the increase of cremations of COVID-19 patients they have to work with their personal protection equipment." Families mourning loved ones are also under strict restrictions during services. No more than 30 people can attend a service, with mourners placed far apart and forbidden to touch each other. "The thing that the impacted families the most is that they can only have a funeral service with a limited number of persons, said Wustenberghs. According to the John Hopkins University, as of Friday, Belgium has registered 1143 deaths due to the coronavirus. For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and could lead to death.
