The Cave Mystery: Where are all the bats?

The Cave Mystery is about a strange knife stuck in a stalagmite in the Onyx Cave just outside of Branson, Missouri. Bats have been vanishing from caves across the United States, most notably at Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico. The film is an exploration of caves and bats from Carlsbad Caverns to caves in Tennessee, Colorado, Arkansas and Missouri. The Cave Mystery is a film by Trey Smith of the God in a Nutshell project. The Bat Flight Program is offered by Carlsbad and the best time to watch the bats is in July and August. Bats can be seen at roughly dusk at the Carlsbad Cavern amphitheater. The return of the bats to the cave occurs mainly between the hours of 4 to 6 am. The bats can be seen in the twilight hours doing incredible dives and maneuvers, reaching speeds in the range of 25 miles per hours. The bat population has reduced from estimated millions to a few hundred thousand at Carlsbad Caverns, and also other cave systems. Bats are pollinators of fruits such as agave and are an important part of delicate ecological systems. Sonar and frequency are used by bats to "see" with sound.
