Natasha Kohli's "Homewould", Abstract Mural/Public Installation in Downtown Chicago Couch Alley

A video discussing the making of and inspiration behind "Homewould", an abstract public art installation in Couch Alley, located in Downtown Chicago on State Street between Lake and Randolph. My name is Natasha Kohli and I have been painting for about fifteen years. My current style is large scale abstracts incorporating a lot of black and white, and using different mediums such as wood, the traditional canvas, plexiglass and acrylic paint. I describe my art as very geometric but organic at the same time. I have my artwork in several businesses across Chicagoland including Neiman Marcus, a few restaurants, private residences and collections, and also the US Embassy in Singapore. The City of Chicago puts on these pop-up events in which they activate these alleys for one night. And the Chicago Loop Alliance approached me about doing a mural wall. When they asked me to do something in that scale, in that location, in the heart of the loop, in downtown Chicago, it was so flattering. Here’s this opportunity to share my passion with potentially hundreds of thousands of people. I decided to take the idea from my Would series and transform it into something a little more three dimensional, and almost sculptural. So I designed it in such a way that it had three layers and the entire thing comes together as one piece. So the inner portions, although they’re more intricate, are continuations of the exterior solid lines. So if you’re standing across the street, all you’ll see is one big maze but as you approach and get closer you’ll see all of the intricacies. I feel like working on this public piece and of this scale was so exciting and exhilarating, so now I have a taste for that large scale artwork. So I’m not sure what’s next but I hope it’s big.
