On October 26, 1881, at approximately 3:00 PM in Tombstone, Arizona Territory, four lawmen walked down Fremont Street to enforce a simple city ordinance: no deadly weapons within town limits. Deputy U.S. Marshal Virgil Earp, his brothers Morgan and Wyatt, and Doc Holliday confronted five armed Cowboys in a vacant lot just 15 feet wide, six doors west of the O.K. Corral's rear entrance. The two groups stood roughly 6 feet apart when Virgil raised his cane and shouted for them to surrender their weapons. In the next 30 seconds, approximately 30 shots were fired, leaving Billy Clanton, Frank McLaury, and Tom McLaury dead or dying, while three lawmen were wounded and Wyatt Earp walked away untouched. What followed was a 30-day preliminary hearing with conflicting testimony, two assassinations, a federal vendetta ride, and eventually a Hollywood legend that would transform a half-minute street fight into the most famous gunfight in American history—even though most people don't know it didn't actually happen at the O.K. Corral at all.
