(6 Aug 2014) At Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, there is an isolation unit similar to the one being used to treat the two Americans infected with the Ebola virus. "Part of the training we've developed here was for viral hemorrhagic fevers like ebola," said Dr. Paul Pepe, the Chief of Emergency Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, "so we've actually trained well over 100,000 people nationally and internationally on how to prepare for these things and what to do and how to recognize it." Nancy Writebol, 59, traveled from Monrovia, Liberia, to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, just downhill from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She arrived two days after Kent Brantly, a doctor with whom she had worked in Liberia and who also contracted Ebola, showed up for treatment. Writebol was described as weak but showing signs of improvement. Brantly and Writebol were both infected despite taking precautions as they treated Ebola patients in West Africa, where the virus has been spreading faster than governments can contain it, killing nearly 900 people so far.
