Ajrakh is known for its geometrical blocks, owing to the influence of Iranian, Persian and to a large degree some Mughal dynasty architecture too. Of course, the latter was much after Ajrakh had already set its mark, as a block print. . . . Different block prints set their mark in different manners - style of block printing (the steps involved), the motifs used, the types of colours and dyes incorporated, or even the fabric used. The different block prints - even today, are distinctive for the same reason. However, over the years, there has been a lot of cross-mixing of the prints - once travelling across the nation became more prominent over the years, the influence becomes more eminent. For instance, while Bagh only used paisleys and was pretty much known for its incorporation of different styles of paisleys - now also uses geometrical patterns - a polar opposite combination! . . . Similarly, Ajrakh has over the years had an influence from all kinds of block prints. Most common influence that you see is the Mughal influence of Jaipuri blocks - delicate florals now seeping their way into the then geometrical craft! Apart from that, a lot of Jaal-like (mesh-like) patterns like Kalamkari block print and some paisleys from Bagh! This overall, is the benefit of globalisation - should we call it that. In the more recent years, Ajrakh has been redefining its geometrical nature - with more influences from the 60s, 70s and 80s - incorporating solid blocks, solid lines, chevrons etc - meanwhile, keeping the essence of what the craft is. . . . Intervention by designers, artists in the current age have given Ajrakh a whole new look. While some of this is absolutely necessary, and uplifts the art to new heights, some of it makes you think.. how far can you deviate from the original craft before you lose its essence - and in this case, Ajrakh stops being Ajrakh? . . . #AjrakhTales with our special Ajrakh block printed Cotton sarees made with the process that was used about 90-100 years ago - way before the earthquake, way before Ajrakh was popular as it is now...
