On our first day on tour we witnessed what will be talked about for years on end! It started out first thing in the morning. We had a private snow coach tour out of the West Yellowstone entrance of Yellowstone. Forty five minutes into our drive as the sun was rising we noticed a black canid species laying in the road—undoubtably a wolf. we started photographing it then another black wolf came out of the forest and joined the other in the road. We then noticed a bison across the Firehole River and there was a wolf with it. This bison already suffered injuries from likely the night prior. We shifted our focus towards the bison and wolf across the river. As this was happening, one by one, more and more wolves started crossing the river to join the pack. If you're a wolf you know the potential damage that an American bison can inflict on them. Some packs may be more inclined in taking the animal down quickly maybe due to desperation, but that’s not what happened here. For the Wapati pack, whether they may be more experienced in hunting or simply was playing it semi-safe they chose to play the long game in the hunt. It stood standing in the water for quite some before it hobbled onto the bank. From there it stayed standing. As mentioned before, it was already wounded as you can see in the video. Throughout the day some of the younger wolves would come up to it and keep it from resting. Finally out of exhaustion it would go to lay down, but the wolves would come in just about every time it went to rest. More often than not it was failed attempts for the wolves to inflict any more physical damage to the bison which they were targeting the wound near its rear. This went on for hours…literally! We waited and waited. As dusk was approaching you can see that some of the more experienced wolves started taking shots at the bison which proved to be successful near the wound area. Whether it was the persistence of the experienced wolves landing strikes further exhausting the bison or simply getting impatient as the sun was setting—or something else—all the wolves came together to join the hunt and the start of that hunt is the beginning of this video. So you watched the video…cool! So it ended without the wolves actually taking down the bison. Unfortunately, we had to leave the park and was unable to capture the final moments of this story, but it was pretty evident on what was going to happen. So believe it or not, on account from a credible source, the wolves didn’t even have to finish it off. The bison seemed to have given up. The bison ended up laying down in the middle of the river which was enough to deter the wolves from entering the water, but that would only last so long. The bison was so spent it ended up submerging its head where it likely drowned. From there it was a feeding frenzy of all 11 wolves that were seen that day. Like I said I was unable to see it because I wasn’t there, but for some of the park employees that live in Yellowstone said, the sounds were something they’ve never heard before! As a full-time guide in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, this is by far the wildest experience I’ve ever got to witness and will be something I will never forget!
