Given today's digital world, the need for accessible solutions is greater than ever. While I've always advocated for an inclusive world, it was a trip to get Thai food that enlightened me to the current sorry state of accessibility. 19% of the population is differently abled and for a period of time, I was one of them. What I found was the accessibility of a solution can be life-changing. Having a crazy blend of life experiences, including retinal detachments, I have a unique perspective on what we should be focusing on to make a better, more inclusive world. Meaningful Use, Department of Defense/VA contracts, Section 508, WCAG 2.0h my!! These are just a few of the reasons we should be focused on building accessible solutions. Because of them, Cerner is required to develop accessible solutions. But, we often fall short of our much-needed goals. The lack of accessibility can lead to misunderstandings, inability to complete work, or much worse when it comes to life or death situations. What does it mean to be accessible and who are the accessibility users? For this talk, I will share my story and provide insight into the what accessibility is. I'll help you understand the different types of users Cerner may have. We'll also explore a few ways to test how accessible your solution is. Finally, I will provide solid starting points and methods to help your team begin a path to meeting accessibility requirements.
