Do I want to make video essays? I have no idea, but I’m trying it. This took root when I started seeing articles about subcultures and current internet aesthetics, claiming that aesthetics are ruining subcultures. When I thought more about it, though, it seemed, first of all, that aesthetics and subcultures are not really trying to be the same thing, though they get equated in a lot of media these days. Second, aesthetics like cottagecore, dark academia, indie sleaze, coastal grandmother, tomato girl, whatever, are not necessarily harmful to subcultures. If anything, they’re a chance to experiment with self-expression (for teenagers, and let’s face it, for adult teenagers like me, too). They’re a chance to try something out, see what feels comfortable, and in some cases, maybe even connect with others. It’s easy to be cynical about what looks shallow, but what if what’s shallow and fun actually holds the seeds of community?
