From AASHTO: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 36,700 people died on America’s roads in 2018 – and while that is down 1 percent from the 37,133 who died in motor vehicle crashes in 2017, it is still far too many in the eyes of Mike Tooley, Director of the Montana Department of Transportation. Tooley, who also serves as chairman of AASHTO’s Committee on Safety, calls that number “shocking.” A former state trooper who rose through the ranks to become Chief of the Montana Highway Patrol, Tooley said he’s witnessed the carnage of motor vehicle crashes up close and has had to bury fellow state troopers who were accidently struck and killed while making routine traffic stops. Studies show that the vast majority of traffic crashes – 93% – are caused by human error. What can be done? In this video Tooley talks about prevention, why Montana has joined a national highway safety campaign called Vision Zero. and what other states can do to reduce their traffic fatalities down to the only acceptable number: zero. Tooley’s commentary is also highlighted in a recent Op-Ed regarding roadway safety authored by Jim Tymon, AASHTO’s executive director, which can be found at: www.linkedin.com%2Fpulse%2Fsafety-always-priority-number-one-jim-tymon%2F&redir_token=4ratUtjySMaG1-l4wAQCrY1Hy8J8MTU3MTI1MTM5NkAxNTcxMTY0OTk2&event=video_description&v=VzM_ESbOHPQ
