The river Aude, also namesake of the department Aude in the region Occitania, flows over about 220 km on the north side of the Pyrenees through several gorges first to the north and then at Carcassonne to the east. Here in this video, the actual Gorges de l'Aude is driven; an approximately 15 km long section of the road D118, which begins south of the Gorges de Saint-Georges and then leads up to the Château d'Usson below the village of Rouze. The road always runs along the left side of the river. In some places the road is cut out of the rock and passes under overhangs. In other places, the road is protected from the river by high walls. Although the asphalt is quite bad in some places, the road is easy to drive on if some care is taken. Further north, the Gorges de la Pierre-Lys, also carved by the Aude River, can be traveled on the D117 road.
