Would you believe that a 145 year old opera has an aria sung by a robot? Jacques Offenbach wrote the opera “The Tales of Hoffmann” in 1880. The story revolves around a poet meeting with his friends in a bar and telling them about his three great romances. His first love was Olympia who, in fact, was an automaton (a machine in human form operated by gears, springs and other mechanical apparati). Unknowingly, the poet had purchased a pair of magical glasses that made Olympia look like a real human and he fell madly in love with her. The video I have for you is a performance of Olympia’s aria “The Birds in the Arbor” or more commonly “The Doll Song” which she sings at a party where her creator, a professor, is introducing her to society. Alas, poor Olympia has a problem during the aria and the professor has to help her out. Olympia is played by the wonderful french coloratura soprano Sabine Devieilhe (Duh-vee-yel). She is able to sing this aria with a level of clarity and complexity that not many other singers can match. The video does not have Closed Caption but the lyrics are not very interesting so no big loss. In this production, Olympia’s costume and choreography is inspired by a popular 1990’s science fiction movie. Can you or your viewers guess the name of the movie?
